BARRIO TELEVISION (work in progress) by Christina DiPasquale (USA, 2026, TBD) uncovers the story of Puerto Rican activists who produced the first bilingual Latino television series to air nationwide called “Realidades.” After tracing U.S. complicity in the 1973 coup in Chile, “Realidades” received backlash and the Nixon administration moved to cut public-media funding, knocking the show off the air. Undeterred, the creators mounted a comeback—training media makers in Philadelphia, organizing a media coalition, and sparking a fight for media power that continues to this day.

Christina DiPasquale is a Colombian-American storyteller based in Philadelphia dedicated to advancing participatory media practices rooted in collective memory and movement-building.

Bob Chilcott- Nidaros Jazz Mass

Our concert, “Reaching H
ome” will feature Emmy Award-winning British composer, Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem. Centering on the experience of those left behind, Goodall’s requiem offers a profound reflection on grief and comfort. Instead of focusing solely on the salvation of the deceased, Eternal Light celebrates the solace found in music while acknowledging the painful reality of loss. This beautiful composition combines familiar liturgical text with poetry and hymns.

This concert will also feature André J. Thomas’ Mass: A Celebration of Love and Joy. This five-movement piece adheres to the traditional liturgical structure of the Mass while being reimagined through the lens of gospel rhythm and harmony.

In addition, we will present Bob Chilcott’s Nidaros Jazz Mass. This innovative mass seamlessly integrates ancient liturgical texts with contemporary jazz. The composition transitions effortlessly from contemplative ballads to vibrant, blues-infused, and high-energy movements.

Join Scribe Video Center in West Philly for a screening of "You Don't Have to Go Home, But..." by Aidan Un, winner of the Audience Award for Favorite Feature Documentary at the 2024 BlackStar Film Festival. The program opens with “Hop Hop Life”, produced through Scribe’s Documentary History Project for Youth (DHPY).

"You Don’t Have to Go Home, But..." by Aidan Un (USA, 2024, 78 min) is an ode to dancing bodies, a grimy love letter to Philly, a story about what to do when the DJ has played the last song, the club’s lights come on, and you gotta go . . . somewhere. Following dancers at different stages of their artistic lives, with legendary party Second Sundae as backdrop, this film examines the possibility of spiritual fulfillment in a socioeconomic configuration that ultimately doesn’t value the practices that make us free.

Aidan Un is a French-Korean filmmaker based in Philadelphia for the past 17 years. When he’s not making films, you can catch him at a Capoeira roda or drumming with Korean Percussion Ensemble 우리얼 (URIOL).

Let’s Hire A Congressperson

Join us for an Ultimate Job Interview to hear from the candidates running in the Third District Democratic Congressional Primary

Unlike most candidate forums in which politicians are asked the same policy questions over and over, the purpose of the Ultimate Job Interview is to interview candidates for the jobs they are seeking by asking them the kinds of questions about leadership, character, management, experience and priorities that job applicants face. Each candidate will be interviewed for about 20 minutes by a panel of hiring executives. We will hear from leading candidates:

State Representative Morgan Cephas

Dr. Dave Oxman

State Representative Chris Rabb

Dr. Ala Stanford

State Senator Sharif Street  (invited)

Spanning from Center City, Fairmount and parts of West Philly to Germantown, Chestnut Hill and Manayunk, the Third District is the most diverse and Democratic in the country. Eighty percent of its voters voted for Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

A crowded field of candidates is vying to replace current Rep. Dwight Evans, who has served in Congress since 2016, before announcing his resignation after a minor stroke. On March 31, join us to hear from the leading candidates about why we should hire them for the open job.

This event is free and open to the public, but you must register in advance.

Featuring new music and performances by Devi Majeske, Pan V, Maya Keren, Anju, and Dwight Dunston aka Duns.

In 1883, at a time when it was rare for women to learn to read and write, much less attend university, Anandibai traveled from India to Philadelphia by herself at the age of 18 to study at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Anandibai’s extraordinary life, resilience, defiance of societal limitations, and commitment to serving others make her a true Philadelphia icon.

Join or Die: Screening and Discussion

Philly was built by people who joined clubs. Watch a movie and talk about why you should join one too.

Feeling disconnected and too addicted to your phone? Join a club. Unsure how to help our Democracy? Join a club. Missing Eagles season already? Join a club. (Go Birds)

Join us for a free community screening of the Emmy-nominated documentary Join or Die followed by an IRL conversation with film Director Pete Davis and local civic leaders about how Philadelphia can fight disconnection and build civic life through clubs.

Based on the groundbreaking research of legendary social scientist Robert Putnam (Bowling Alone), Join or Die tells the story of America’s decades-long decline in community connection. Learn what makes democracy work and, most importantly, what we can do about it!

Hot chocolate and snacks provided. Come curious. Come solo. Leave with ideas — and maybe even a club to join.

Special thanks to the Fels Institute of Government, Philadelphia Ethical Society, and Join Philly for their partnership.
